DOI: 10.12788/j.sder.0101 Effects of Aging on Midfacial and Lower Facial Appearance The aging process changes the skin and the underlying structural support provided by the musculoskeletal system. The pace of change varies considerably from one individual to another. Moreover, tissues changes are interdependent in that age-related changes in one tissue can influence subsequent alterations in other tissues.1 Decreased cranial support leads to soft-tissue descent in the midface. Loss of tone in supporting musculature, increased laxity in retaining ligaments, and descent of suborbital fat pads exacerbate the downward anatomic shift. Reabsorption occurs along the mandible and maxilla, accompanied by loss of dentition. Essentially, the midface and lower face appear to collapse.

The Anatomic Basis of Midfacial Aging

Facial aging is a multifactorial, three-dimensional (3D) process with anatomic, biochemical, and genetic correlates. Many exogenous and endogenous factors can signifi cantly impact the perceived age of an individual. Solar exposure [ 1– 3 ] , cigarette smoking [ 1, 2, 4, 5 ] , medications [ 1 ] , alcohol use [ 1 ] , body mass index [ 2 ] , and endocrinologic status [ 1, 6, 7 ] have all been imp...

Analysis of Age-Related Changes in Asian Facial Skeletons Using 3D Vector Mathematics on Picture Archiving and Communication System Computed Tomography

PURPOSE There are marked differences in facial skeletal characteristics between Asian and Caucasian. However, ethnic differences in age-related facial skeletal changes have not yet been fully established. The aims of this study were to evaluate age-related changes in Asian midfacial skeletons and to explore ethnic differences in facial skeletal structures with aging between Caucasian and Asian....

The Clinical Importance of the Fat Compartments in Midfacial Aging

SUMMARY The recent identification of the facial fat compartments has greatly affected our understanding of midfacial aging. This article chronicles the discovery of these fat compartments including the shift of attention from a purely gravitational to a volumetric approach to facial aging and the series of methodologies attempted to ultimately define the anatomy of these compartments. The reviv...

intraoral communication. Marunick et al1 classified midfacial defects into 2 major categories: midline midfacial defects, which include the nose and/or upper lip; and lateral defects, which include the cheek and orbital contents. Combinations of these 2 categories also exist. Acquired midfacial defects often present with severe disfigurement and functional impairment. Large defects that result ...
